South Africa's electoral agency has condemned the violence that followed a weekend political rally in which nine ruling ANC supporters were injured.
"The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) wishes to strongly condemn the propagation and prevalence of political intolerance and violence that manifested itself in some parts of the country," it said in a statement.
"The Commission is concerned and dismayed by the signs of disregard for the freedom of association and the right to assemble for political campaigning, which was demonstrated in Kwa-Zulu Natal."
Nine supporters of the African National Congress (ANC) were injured on Sunday in attacks as the party campaigned in an opposition stronghold in Kwa-Zulu Natal province. Three were shot.
General elections are expected any time from mid-April and President Kgalema Motlanthe is due to announce the exact date shortly. ANC leader Jacob Zuma is favourite in the polls.
